Freewheelers Regular Club Meeting
November 1, 2004
Board members present:
Marly Divver, Betty Campbell, Andrew Danfy, John Bryan, Paul LeFrancois,
Steve Yetman, Richard Dillard
- Marly Divver called the meeting to order and welcomed
those present.
- Emily Neeley from Upstate Forever was introduced and gave
a program about the organization, its mission and goals. Upstate
Forever is a nonprofit organization that promotes sensible growth
and strives to protect special places. They actively encourage
alternative transportation.
- The minutes for the last meeting were approved as distributed.
- Betty Campbell reported on the current state of our bank
accounts. She read a list of outstanding checks some from
2002 and asked that these checks be located.
- Marly passed around a ride calendar for November. She
is leading a "So What's The Hurry" ride on November
20th from North Greenville College.
- Steve, Ken and Marly rode part of the new bike lane on
Highway 11 and reported that it was quite nice riding with very
little trash. Discussion followed.
- Andrew Danfy talked about the bike clothing order for
winter. He has all sizes available. Other than the renewal of
the racing license, he had no racing report.
- John Bryan reported that she should have some news at
the next meeting about the 2005 Assaults and the current road
conditions.
- Paul Lefrancois discussed the Festivalo in December and
the Share the Road ribbon magnets which can still be ordered.
He reminded everyone that PCC membership runs January through
December so renewal time is approaching. Paul touched upon the
plans to create a new week-long festival during the week before
Mt. Mitchell. Several grants have been applied for that would
promote biking in the area we are awaiting word on approval.
The reward fund to help find answers when a cyclist is struck
by a car is growing. More clubs are participating.
- Steve Yetman has added the minutes of past meetings to
the website. He also sent out a new list of club members. Jeff
Howland made the suggestion to flag the new members in some way.
- Dave Proctor reported that all is in place for the Christmas
party on December 6th. The doors open at 6:30 and
dinner is at 7:00. A map and the menu are on the website. Please
bring unwrapped gift for a child to the party.
- Jeff Howland discussed the ID card for the cyclists. It
would include things like blood type, allergies, any emergency
information. These would be offered to the club members at a
nominal cost. If interested contact Jeff. He will put his contact
information on the website.
- Marly Divver reported on the SPATS Committee meeting she
attended. She said that the committee wants to reissue the bike
route map. They have requested that the Freewheelers ride the
existing routes, evaluate them and submit new ones as well. Then
the committee will choose some for the updated map. Also, the
committee is bringing in an outside group to hold meetings about
a walkable/bikeable community. There will be 8 meetings in the
county, probably four in Spartanburg. Volunteers will be needed
to help with that.
- There was some discussion on the high mileage plaques.
This year we will start using a multi-year plaque to curb costs.
- Mark Kyzer gave us a card from his wife thanking the club
for the plants sent while she was having radiation therapy. He
also announced a sale this week to celebrate that Bike On has
been operating one year.
- Marly Divver noted that the Freewheelers had received
a request for a letter of support. Spartanburg Regional Medical
Center wants to build a Hospice House in Spartanburg and needs
support letters from organizations and businesses in the area.
She will write the letter and send it off.
- There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
In the absence of our Secretary, Gloria Anderson, these
minutes were taken by Emily Cohen and keyboarded by Marly Divver.
