Presentation of Carmichael Training Systems by Colin Izzard www.trainright.com 828-230-2225
Carmichael Training Systems are opening a new center in Ashville, NC.
Handouts and free samples were given out.
They are specializing in the Southeast and will meet with clubs.
Colin conducted a question and answer session.
Discussed the use of Heart Rate monitors and Power Meters
Statement: Quality of ride is more important than quantity in training. 90 minutes of good training is better than 4 hours of bad training.
A rider should do two 3 mile time trials to determine lactic threshold. This gives a more accurate assessment than general rules like 220 minus your age.
Workouts should be based on a percentage of your maximum heart rate.
Lactic Acid Levels
95% of Max + 3 beats—Cusp of O2 use
90% of Max + 3 beats—Zone 4—a good level to train
85% of Max + 3 beats—Tempo, Low workouts
Question that should be asked before every ride: What am I training for today?
Listen to your body. Do not overtrain.
Heart Rate Monitors have problems like uncomfortable straps and radio interference.
Power Meters would be better for training, but they are very expensive. The best is made by SRM, but it costs $1900.
Other, cheaper meters are available, but suffer from inaccuracies and possible water contamination.
Cross training: Running, swimming, and gym work can help.
Bikers do need breaks.
