Freewheelers of Spartanburg
Meeting Minutes for 03/07/05
Westside Library
7-8 PM
Presiding: Marly Divver
24 Members Present
Item One: Minutes from February meeting were approved. Marly Divver read the Treasurers report of the Freewheelers savings and checking account. A suggestion was made to look into changing our bank accounts to a higher interest yielding bank account. This will be addressed at the next board meeting.
Item Two: Andrew Danfy - Racing Report
We have a title sponsor for the bike criterium - Vic Bailey Volkswagen.
Training ride # 2 for Mt. Mitchell will be held March 12 from
North Greenville College in Tigerville. A motion was made and
seconded to order 50 more bike jerseys.
Item Three: John Bryan - Mt. Mitchell Report
Due to the difficulty of local members sending in their applications
late, a suggestion was made to have a cutoff date and stick with
it. Steve Yetman will put a statement on our web page that the
Mt. Mitchell rider limit of 1000 has been met. The Friday ride
has affected the rest stop participation. More volunteers are
needed. John reminded us that in order to guarantee a Mitchell
jersey we must order now. Mike Bonner needs more vehicles on
the course this year as the route is split and there is more territory
to cover. Email Mike or Eric Turner is you are able to help.
John believes the new Mt. Mitchell route is not as desolate and
has less total climbing. He also gave us a word of advice -
Watch out for bears in the tunnel!!! He will look into the traffic
issue as well as school busses on the route.
Item Four: Richard Dillard - Publicity Report
Marly congratulated Richard on publicity. Biking has had good
coverage in the newspaper as 3 staff members for the Herald-Journal
are training for the Assault. Yon Lambert is writing articles.
We have also had press releases for training rides. Mayor Bill
Barnett is involved and hopefully Governor Sanford as well.
Item Five. Paul LeFrancois - PCC Report
Paul told us about the activities scheduled for Bike Town Week
beginning with the Lollapalooza Loop ride on Saturday, May 14
through the Outdoor Sports Festival & Criterium on Saturday,
May 21. The South Carolina Tour de Cure will be held June 4-5.
PCC has published their annual report for 2004. Paul thanked
the club for our support. Cooper River Bridge will open up the
end of May or early June and a new bike lane will be dedicated.
Item Six: Jeff Cook - Bike Shop and Insurance Information
Jeff urged the membership to visit our local bike shops. If you
are a current paid Freewheeler member and participate in a scheduled
club ride, you are covered under accidental medical insurance,
which is a secondary insurance coverage. Your personal insurance
policy is primary. This coverage is for rides that do not charge
a fee. He suggested that we have nonmembers sign a waiver stating
that they acknowledge that Freewheelers are not responsible in
case of an accident.
Item Seven: Election of Club Secretary
Due to the resignation of Gloria Anderson, the office of Secretary
was filled. Patti Moran was nominated and elected.
Item Eight: Explanation of Trademark Registration
The club owns the trademark. Steps are being taken to protect
the trademark and will be completed in approximately 1 year by
a Greenville attorney. A vote to officially pursue trademark
protection is scheduled for the March 22nd board meeting.
Do not forget to order you next pizza from Little Caesars. Paul Melotte, owner of several local Little Caesars, graciously provided the pizza for the meeting. He also donates pizza monthly for the Sunday ride from Bike On. Paul LeFrancois volunteered to help pickup pizza.
Chris Anderson presented a letter requesting the board to send an apology to Great Escape and also post it on the website. This request will be entertained at the next board meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 8:10.
Respectfully submitted,
Patti Moran
Secretary
