History
Rumor has it that there was a Tour de Paws type ride in the 90's....so
in 2003 a Spartanburg Humane Society board member (Joe Brunson)
and myself decided we would try to revive it. The Humane Society
director and staff offered their support and volunteers, and the
Freewheelers of Spartanburg Board of Directors offered the club's
expertise and strong reputation for putting on a first class ride....and
this charity ride with a local benefactor (Humane Society) that
so many believe in was born.
Dave Proctor suggested the beautiful farm land countryside on
the west side of Spartanburg county as a perfect place to carve
out a course.....and he was right. With one minor adjustment for
construction, we have used the same roads for both the 27 mile
and 61 mile courses since the first ride in September 2003. Our
participation has grown from 125 riders the first year to 295
in 2006. Our growing reputation of a challenging, well marked
course......a hot meal after the ride.......and 100% of the rider
entry fees going directly to the Humane Society have kept everyone
coming back and bringing more friends each year.
Thank you for making this event such a great success in the past.
See you at the start.
Jeff Cook
Tour de Paws Director
Purpose
Simple. ALL rider entry fees go directly to the Spartanburg Humane Society (SHS), a non-profit organization that provides a temporary home for all of the county's homeless animals. Like all non-profits, SHS depends on the public's financial support to operate. The current President, Sandy Christiansen, is focused not only on taking care of all the animals that come through the doors, but expanding the services offered to the community including low cost veterinary services and new humane education and animal behavior and obedience training departments. CLICK HERE for a recent news article about these services) All of these public services, as well as providing shelter and necessary care for 18,000 (annually) puppies, kittens, cats and dogs that would otherwise be wandering the streets.....are made possible by great fundraisers like the Tour de Paws.
The following is a message from the Humane Society Director...
Our Board of Directors guides our vision,
which is carried out by committed, knowledgeable, and skilled
staff members. But the strength and capacity of the Spartanburg
Humane Society ultimately reflects the extent to which community
members support our mission. At the end of the day, friends like
you determine the scope and reach of our services.
Thank you for helping us to continue this vital tradition of caring and compassion for those who cannot speak for themselves.
